Whilst most people benefit from Eskom’s electricity in South Africa, this video shows how it’s the health and lives of the people in the Highveld that are disproportionately suffering from the health impacts due to pollution from South Africa’s energy supplier.
To further exacerbate the problem, the Department of Environmental Affairs is currently considering an application from Eskom, the country’s’ biggest air polluter, to not comply with the country’s already weak air quality standards. This is in spite of recent research from the World Health Organisation that air pollution is responsible for 1 in 8 deaths globally. If granted, Eskom will emit even higher levels of pollution, severely impacting people’s health.
