Power Up! A Just Energy Transition in the South

In October 2013, Project 90 by 2030 hosted an international conference outside Cape Town for NGOs from Brazil, India and South Africa to initiate South-South collaboration regarding Renewable Energy policy.

Ten delegates working for civil society organizations from each country got together to elaborate and visualise on what a Just Energy transition can look like, particularly in a context of climate change and predicted environmental degradation. Their focus was on strategizing for better policies and implementation of renewable energy.

Unlocking the gifts

Today we are going to visit one of our inspiring community partnership projects at Sibongile Day and Night Care Centre in Khayelitsha, a care centre for disabled children. Our innovative renewable energy solutions have helped to keep the children warm in winter and reduce their monthly electricity bills. The Project 90 team will enjoy a celebratory lunch with the Sibongile staff. We’ve made this heartwarming short film about the project – after watching it at the office, there was hardly a dry eye in the room! Well done to all involved, this is a truly inspiring project. Project 90 has been busy planning an international conference which will begin in Cape Town next week. Participants from Brazil, India and South Africa will come together for a week to discuss their vision for a beautiful, smart and realistic energy supply for the South by 2030.

Project 90 launches our Smart Electricity Report today! After months of hard work, our report if finally complete. We are launching it at the Alternative Development Information Centre to civil society groups to share our research which provides a solid evidence base for how electricity planning in South Africa can be improved. Our report reveals how an innovative focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy in particular offer more elegant solutions than a dogged persistence with outdated, utility-scale electricity planning.
